Vayechi | ויחי | “He lived.”

Pictured is an illustration of Yahuwseph (Joseph) receiving “The Double Portion Inheritance” (Genesis 48:22) from his father, Yaaqob-Yisrael (Jacob-Israel) as his brothers watch with a humble attitude. This scenario is a prophetic picture of our Messiah at his return, when he will receive “Both Houses of Yisrael” as his “Double Portion Inheritance.

The entire story of Joseph is a prophetic “type and shadow of our Messiah who (just like Joseph) received from his Father in heaven the heathen nations as an inheritance. Joseph’s brothers typify “The lost sheep of the House of Yisrael” (Matthew 10:6; 15:24) who at one time or another in history, rejected Yahuwshuwa as their Messiah. Because the Jerusalem Sanhedrin rejected the good news (gospel) of Messiah in the 1st Century, YaHuWaH allowed the Romans to come and destroy their city and their Temple as judgement. 

After the Roman Siege in 70 A.D., the good news of Messiah was published and sent to the heathen nations, just as Joseph was sent to Egypt (a gentile nation). At Messiah’s second coming, he will indeed inherit both Houses of Yisrael who have been exiled into the heathen nations for their harlotry. The prophet Jeremiah rebuked both Houses of Yisrael, telling them that their punishment would be doubled because (like the prodigal son), they have defiled their Fathers inheritance:

Yirmeyahuw (Jeremiah) 16:18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled my inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable and abominable things.

In the future however, when both Houses of Yisrael repent for their idolatry, YaHuWaH will restore to them double what was taken from them, just as in the parable of the prodigal son:

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 61:7 For your shame you shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

The prophets of old foretold about the Double Portion Inheritance of our Messiah, citing that he would be a “rock of offensefor both houses of Yisra’el.

Tehilliym (Psalm) 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give you the heathen for your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Yisra’el, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

In “The Parable of the Prodigal Son told by our Messiah in Luke 16, we see a prophetic picture of both, the House of Judah (Jews), as well as the House of Ephrayim (Gentiles). The prodigal son story contains hidden meaning for these two groups at different times in history. 

At the first coming of Messiah, the prodigal son typified the House of Yisrael, or The Ten Northern Tribes of Ephrayim. However, over the past 2,000 years Ephrayim has been prophetically called “The Fullness of the Gentiles, or in Hebrew “Melo haGoyim, (Romans 11:25). In Genesis 48:19, Yaaqob-Yisrael (Jacob-Israel) prophesied over Ephrayim (the youngest son of Joseph) and declared that he would become “A multitude of nations.This phrase in Hebrew is “Melo haGoyim, which literally means “The Fullness of the Gentiles!

During these past 2,000 years, The Two Southern Tribes of Judah & Benjamin aka “The Jewish People,are the ones who have typified the prodigal son. The story of Joseph and his brothers have some of the same events as in the story of the prodigal son, only some of the details are reversed to signify that our Messiah came to “reverse the cursebrought on by disobedience. 

For instance, the prodigal son chose to leave his fathers house to go into a foreign country and squander his inheritance. Whereas Joseph was sent away to a foreign country, against his will, and he was not the one who squandered his inheritance. It was his brothers who destroyed his coat of many colors (symbolic of his inheritance) by soaking it in the blood of a goat in order to deceive their father. Yet, in both stories, the prodigal son and Joseph are restored many years later to the Father and given a “double portion inheritance.”

This week’s portion is called Wayechi/Vayechi, and it means “he lived,” referring to Yaaqob-Yisrael (Jacob-Israel) as well as Yahuwseph (Joseph) who (like our Messiah) was thought to be dead, yet he was now discovered to be alive after all these years.

The story of Joseph being restored to his estranged family paints a prophetic picture of the House of Yahuwdah (Judah) when they will finally recognize their Messiah at his return. They will finally look upon the one whom they pierced and they will mourn and be in bitterness for him as one mourns for his only son (Zechariah 12:10).

This is the same scenario that we saw in last week’s portion as Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and they mourned and wept as they realized how wrong they were for betraying him and plotting his disappearance years ago.

This week’s portion focuses on the blessings that Yaaqob-Yisrael (Jacob-Israel) gave to his twelve sons and his two grandsons. The two sons of Joseph thought they were gentiles or Egyptians, until their grandfather Jacob-Israel said to these two boys “Let my name be named upon them!” (Genesis 48:16).

Suddenly, these two boys realized that although their mother was Egyptian, and they were raised in an Egyptian culture, they are Yisrael! 

Similarly, many Christians who follow the Messiah, Yahuwshuwa (whom they call Jesus) think of themselves as “gentiles” until the heavenly Father (like Jacob-Israel) declares to them “Let my name be named upon them!” 

In Revelation 14:1-4, the 144,000 are those who have been redeemed by the Lamb of Elohiym and they have “their fathers name upon their foreheads.”

The blessing that Jacob-Israel prayed over Joseph’s sons, Ephrayim & Manasseh was a prophecy about the Two Houses of Yisrael in the future (Isaiah 8:14). Manasseh’s name means “to cause to forget,” which is a picture of Ancient Yisrael as they were divorced (Jeremiah 3:8), forsaken and “forgotten,” (Isaiah 54:4-7). Manasseh was said to become “a great nation.” Yet, even after becoming a great nation, Manasseh (like Yisraelwould be sent into exile into the nations for their idolatry and they would seem to have been forgotten for many years.

This is why Ancient Yisrael declared that they were forgotten. However, YaHuWaH promised them that he would ultimately not forget them:

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 49:14 But Tziyown (Zion) said, YHWH has forsaken me, and my master has forgotten me.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 44:21 Remember these, O Yaaqob (Jacob) and Yisra’el (Israel); for you are my servant: I have formed you; you are my servant: O Yisra’el (Israel), you shall not be forgotten of me.

The younger son of Joseph, (Ephrayim) is the one who was given the blessing of the “firstborn” (Jeremiah 31:9), for his name means “double fruitfulness.” The stick of Ephrayim is “in the hand of Joseph” (Ezekiel 37:19).
